Neurological Physiotherapy

What is Neurological Physiotherapy?

Neurological physiotherapy is rehabilitation for people who have suffered injury to their brain, spinal cord or other peripheral nerves.

Neurological rehabilitation aims to improve function, movement and independence for people living with injuries of their nervous and neuromuscular system.

Often, injuries to your central or peripheral nervous system can result in a wide variety of symptoms including muscle weakness, sensory changes, reduced balance and changes to gait and mobility which can create difficulty completing everyday tasks.

What will an initial appointment look like?

We understand that because neurological conditions affect each individual differently, there is no one assessment or treatment that will work for everyone. That is why our physiotherapists are trained professionals that can modify and complete a comprehensive assessment to best suit your needs.

An initial appointment will involve gathering a full medical and personal history and completing a functional assessment to help understand your situation, environment, pattern of movements, strengths and highlight any areas that you are having difficulty with.

This will include setting goals for therapy with your practitioner to ensure treatment is modified and tailored to exactly what you want to achieve.

At Body Smart Health, we have the equipment, facilities and expertise to accurately measure your functional capacity to make it easier to monitor progression to ensure you are on track to achieve your goals.

Different methods of testing including assessing:

Muscular strength and tone

Joint range of motion and muscle length

Sensation and reflex testing

Coordination

Static and dynamic balance

Functional tasks - this can include looking at your walking, bed mobility, transfers and other everyday tasks that you complete

Is physiotherapy effective?

There is constantly new research coming out regarding neurological injuries and rehabilitation including new and effective methods. Currently, there are several known and effective principles of neurological physiotherapy that management is based on.

One key principle of neurological rehabilitation is neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the concept that the brain is dynamic and has the ability to rearrange connections and neural pathways in order to compensate for what has been lost or damaged with a neurological injury.

Neuroplasticity and your brain’s ability to adjust and create new pathways is what allows physiotherapy treatment to help develop new or lost movements or regain the ability to stand, walk or complete other functional tasks.

With this concept of neuroplasticity, we understand that optimal rehabilitation needs to involve activities focused on specificity, repetition, intensity and feedback which is why physiotherapists are the most appropriate health professionals for commencing your neurological rehabilitation journey.

What can you expect from a physiotherapy session at Body Smart Health?

Neurological rehabilitation focuses on the retraining of functional tasks in order to capitalise on neuroplasticity and form new neural pathways. Because of this, physiotherapists will break down specific tasks or movements that you are having difficulty with and choose targeted exercises at the appropriate intensity, while providing feedback to improve quality and give you the best opportunity to learn and develop new skills to progress towards your goals.
